THR has compiled a one-of-a-kind look at the composition of the board over the past decade and which seats are coming up for grabs in the future.
The roughly 6,500 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who are divided into 17 branches, have until 5 p.m. PT on July 12 to cast a ballot in support of one of the four finalists for one of their branch’s three seats on the organization’s board of governors, which, according to its website, “directs the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health and assures the fulfillment of its mission.”
The board consists of 51 elected governors, who serve staggered three-year terms so that each branch has one seat come up for grabs every year, plus three governors-at-large, who are nominated by the president and elected by the board for three-year terms to represent the interest of diversity. No member may serve on the board for more than three consecutive terms — nine consecutive years — without taking at least one year off before running again.
This is all a lot to remember and keep track of, which is why THR has put together a one-of-a-kind chart — which we will update annually — to help illustrate who has been on the board over the past decade, who is on the board now and who will be coming up for re-election or “terming out” over the next three years. This year, as you can see below, 11 incumbents are up for reelection (and are among the “final four” or, in one case, “final two” to appear on the ballot); three termed out; and two chose not to run again.
