Although the basic story behind Blake Shelton’s latest album If I’m Honest is anything but secret — divorce from country superstar Miranda Lambert and romantic redemption with pop queen and fellow Voice team leader Gwen Stefani — there’s still a lot the free-speaking singer wants to share about his journey. Blake Shelton on Gwen, Twitter Mistakes and Tabloid Trouble »Speaking with Handler in a clip from the revealing interview, Shelton lays out the album’s origins with no filter, saying he was just trying to “pick the pieces up from being at the rock bottom” when he and Stefani both realized how much they had in common.
“She’s going through basically the same exact thing at the same time,” he explains, saying that his whole life turned around in what seemed like no time at all.
“All this has to be meant to happen,” he says. “So I made a record about it.”
Shelton also admits that talking about the situation makes him nervous, but when pressed about whether or not he’s happier now than he was before, there was no hesitation in his answer.
“There’s no question about that,” he says.
The entirety of Blake Shelton’s interview airs tomorrow, July 7th, on Chelsea on Netflix.
