Back in April, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall hosted a pair of sold-out tribute shows in honor of David Bowie. Artists like Michael Stipe, the Flaming Lips, Cat Power, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Laurie Anderson, and more covered songs spanning Bowie’s career. Okayplayer TV has shared a short documentary, directed by Rafe Scoobey-Thal, featuring interviews with many of the concert’s participants. Recorded backstage during concert rehearsals, the artists revealed their some of their favorite songs and discussed their favorite memories of Bowie. Cat Power, Stipe, the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle, Esperanza Spalding, Anderson, Cyndi Lauper, Harry, the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, Bilal, Perry Farrell, Rickie Lee Jones, Robyn Hitchcock, and Heart’s Ann Wilson spoke in the video. You can watch it below.
Some tidbits from the video: Cat Power said she thought of Bowie as a “mother figure in a weird way.” Harry reminisced on her first US tour with Bowie when he was playing keys for Iggy Pop, and Coyne said Bowie was a “mythological entity like Santa Clause, or Jesus Christ, or Evel Knievel.” The documentary also features footage of Bowie live shows and music videos, interspersed with the interviews.
