In 2014, Eric Garner died in New York City after a police officer placed him into a chokehold while placing him under arrest. Today, Garner’s family has released “I Can’t Breathe,” a new song titled after Garner’s final words as he was held to the sidewalk by police. According to Billboard, the new song features Garner’s sister Ellisha Flagg and his brother Steven Flagg. Listen to it below.
Many artists have responded to the police-related violence of the past week. Miguel shared a new song, “How Many,” in support of Black Lives Matter, while Beyoncé penned tributes to both the police officers gunned down in Dallas as well as the victims of police brutality. Her husband Jay Z also released a new song, “spiritual,” in response to police brutality. In Los Angeles, the Game and Snoop Dogg led a police brutality protest in the wake of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
