Star James Lesure took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce that the network would not move forward with a second season of the Universal Television/ABC Studios co-production. ABC confirmed that the remake of John Hughes’ 1989 feature film will not return.
“Disappointed. No more @ABCUncleBuck. Cancelled. Thankful to have worked with @ABCNetwork. Proud of what we’ve done. Thx 4 let us entertain u,” Lesure wrote.
The comedy featured an African-American cast including Lesure, Mike Epps and Nia Long. Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley (Happy Endings) were showrunners. Will Packer executive produced the series.
Uncle Buck was one of many remakes ordered to series this past broadcast season, with ABC also cancelling The Muppets, CBS axing Limitless and Rush Hour and Fox dropping Minority Report. In their place, the networks have turned to a new roster of reboots of feature films and TV series including MacGyver and Training Day (both at CBS), Lethal Weapon, The Exorcist, Prison Break and 24 (all at Fox) and Taken (at NBC).
While not a critically hailed outing, Uncle Buck fared decently in the typically lower-rated summer period, averaging a 1.0 among adults under 50.
