Yesterday’s July 4 celebrations at the White House, where Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe performed on the South Lawn, doubled as a birthday celebration. After thanking America’s service men and women, the president turned attention to his oldest daughter, Malia Obama, who turned 18 yesterday. “Just because it’s the job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job,” he said. With help from his musical guests, Obama proceeded to lead a “Happy Birthday” singalong, before Malia joined him on stage for a hug. Watch it happen below.
The president also thanked Lamar and Monáe for their presence:
I have to tell you, these two, I’ve gotten a chance to know, and they are both amazing artists and talented and popular and doing great things. But they are also very conscious about their responsibilities and obligations. And they put in a lot of time and effort on behalf of a lot of causes that are important. We’re really proud of them for that.
