Back in April, Sturgill Simpson made an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where he teamed up with the host to sing about Waffle House etiquette in the song “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Knuckleheads.” Last night, Simpson and Colbert embarked on a mission: to have the greasy-spoon anthem played on an actual Waffle House jukebox.

10 New Country Artists You Need to Know: July 2016 »Simpson met Colbert at the Charleston, South Carolina, Waffle House where Colbert says he spent his “young drunkenness in.” It’s an inspired bit, with Simpson distancing himself from his usually stone-faced public image by riding piggyback style on Colbert’s back, donning a Waffle House uniform and calling out Beethoven for the composer’s inability to have his own Waffle House song. “Sturgill, one; Ludwig, zero,” he quips. Simpson does mean-mug one patron, however, as Colbert warns the kid not to look the singer in the eyes.
The skit ends with a late-night dance party and Colbert and Simpson serving up a spate of waffles, before slipping off into the night with a purloined bottle of syrup. Says Simpson, “I love you Waffle House.”
