It’s the weekend! What better way to get it started than with the latest installment of “Funeral Doom Friday”. This weekly column looks to shed some light onto some of the darkest, most depressing, and discordant metal out there. Funeral Doom stems from the deepest depths of Death-Doom and Dirge music. Each week, the goal is to highlight some of the newest music or rediscover classic works from some of the earliest bands and originators such as Australia’s Mournful Congregation, United States’s Evoken, UK’s Esoteric and the Finnish Thergothon. Frequent readers of this column might remember back in February that Germany’s one-man funerary force of Imperceptum was featured for his debut album, Collapse of Existence. Imperceptum’s sole member, Void, creates a vicious blend of atmospheric Black Metal and Funeral Doom Metal that has quickly become a personal favorite among newer acts in the genre (another being Vancouver’s Temple of Abandonment). This week sees the release of a new, two-song EP entitled Entering the Domains of Complete Nonexistence and the continuation of a burgeoning, evil sound.
Void is a fitting namesake for the mastermind behind Imperceptum, his music embodies a perilous black hole that the very word defines. The combination of interspersed Black Metal tempos and styling with the bottomed-out, Death Doom howl and saddening ethos that Funeral Doom inherently possesses tear at the very fabric of existence. The A-side track, “Behold the Arrival of Anti-Creation” and the B-side title track total a shade over 26 minutes. Throughout the duration of this EP, the music moves seamlessly between modes. At times, blackened tremolo guitars substitute long sustained notes. Other moments, blast beats evolve from tempered drum patterns that seem to draw the listener into a spiral towards infinite death. All the while, a shared atmosphere between Black Metal and Funeral Doom hovers just above the chaos, composed by distant guitars and sound effects.
Entering the Domains of Complete Nonexistence bolsters an impressive debut from Imperceptum and should inspire confidence in Funeral Doom fans that Void’s music is not a single instance of brilliance but an omen for sustained success.
